Pope John Paul II established Opus Dei as a personal prelature, a canonical status foreseen for it by Saint Josemaría, who explained in 1962: “I set to work, and it wasn’t easy. Souls slipped through my fingers like eels in water. As well as that, there was the most brutal incomprehension, because what today is ordinary religious teaching throughout the world, was not so then… All the theological and ascetical doctrine had yet to be created, and the canonical doctrine too. I found a centuries-long gap: there was nothing at all. The whole of the Work was sheer madness, humanly speaking. And so some people said I was mad and that I was a heretic, and all sorts of other things besides.”
