In 2006 the last of my brothers to emigrate arrived in the USA from our home country. (...) He had stayed behind to complete his medical studies, and then came over. He then prepared for the tough exams to qualify for work. We thought that was all, but there was more. The most difficult part, in fact the impossible part, was getting a place to work in a hospital in California.
I thought my brother might as well say, OK, I’ll go to Nebraska or any other state in the USA, since the situation was impossible. There were about 150,000 applicants, including people born and qualified in the USA. There were just 5,000 places and my brother was only an immigrant. It was just impossible, so I said “No-one can outdo God,” and I began to pray the Novena for Work of St Josemaria. I just prayed that my brother could get into one of the hospitals in California at the end of the nine days of the Novena for Work. I waited two days and went to see my brother as usual. He’s not an expressive person, but that day he said “Guess what! I’ve been allocated a job in a hospital here in California, but I don’t know which hospital they’ll send me to.” California is a very large state with many hospitals. Well, I was so delighted that I went out thanking God and saying, “Yes! It’s true that nothing is impossible to you, God!” and thanking Saint Josemaria.
Two days later I came home quite late, as usual, and found a card at the door from a doctor which said in English, “Welcome, Doctor (...) now that you are part of our team!” It was signed by the director of the hospital just round the corner from my house. I called my brother straight away and to give him the message and he said he was celebrating already – he had received his allocation to the hospital right near my house. He sounded so happy as he told me! He didn’t know I had prayed the Novena for Work and I didn’t tell him, but he said right out, “It’s a miracle!” I still can’t believe it, I was so happy. (...)
Then I thanked St Josemaria and said, “My God, I only asked you for somewhere in California.” And my brother was sent to the hospital in this city, (...) just three minutes away from where I live. Thank you.
