Pope invites young people to share St Josemaria’s universal outlook

In the general audience on March 31 for those in St Peter’s Square, many of whom had travelled to Rome to celebrate Holy Week and Easter, the Pope, addressing young people especially, said: “Dear friends, you have come to Rome in Holy Week for an experience of faith, friendship and spiritual enrichment. I invite you to reflect on the importance of university study for the formation of that ‘universal Catholic mentality’ which St Josemaria described in these terms: ‘a breadth of vision and a vigorous endeavour to study more deeply the things that are permanently alive and unchanged in Catholic orthodoxy’. May there be, in each of you, a growing desire to meet Jesus Christ personally, so as to bear joyful witness to him in all places.”

The Pope’s words referred to no. 428 of Furrow, written by the founder of Opus Dei:

“Since you want to acquire a Catholic or universal mentality, here are some characteristics you should aim at:
- a breadth of vision and a deepening insight into the things that remain alive and unchanged in Catholic orthodoxy;
- a proper and healthy desire, which should never be frivolous, to present anew the standard teachings of traditional thought in philosophy and the interpretation of history;
- a careful awareness of trends in science and contemporary thought;
- and a positive and open attitude towards the current changes in society and in ways of living.”

The audience included about four thousand university students from thirty countries who are taking part in the UNIV international congress organised by the Opus Dei prelature, whose theme for 2010 is “Can Christianity inspire a global culture?” This is the forty-third year the congress has been held, organised by the Institute for University Cooperation (ICU) which was originally inspired by the founder of Opus Dei, St Josemaria Escriva.
