When Josemaría was very little, his mother and father taught him to pray short and simple prayers to Jesus, Mary and his Guardian Angel.

In the morning, To our Lady
St Josemaría's Mommy taught him to get up straight away in the morning and offer the new day to our Lady:

O my Lady, O my Mother,
I offer myself entirely to you,
and in proof of my filial affection
I offer to you this day my eyes,
my ears, my tongue, my heart,
in a word, my whole self.
Now that I am entirely yours
Mother of goodness,
keep me and defend me as your
own property and possession.
Amen

To Jesus, before going to bed
His grandmother taught him this prayer of St Teresa of Avila:

Yours am I, I was born for thee,
What is it, 0 Jesus, you want of me?

Josemaría never forgot the prayers his parents and grandparents taught him.
He learnt from them how to pray simply and from the heart

To his Guardian Angel
Every night he would say:

0 Guardian Angel, to you I pray,
Desert me not, by night or day.
If you were to leave me, where would I be?
0 Guardian Angel, pray for me

For his First Holy Communion
The prayer Josemaria had learned beforehand to prepare for his first Holy Communion.

“I wish, Lord, to receive You
with the purity, humility and devotion
with which Your most holy Mother received You,
with the spirit and fervor of the saints.”
