On Tuesday 18 August 2009, Mr Liam Ahern, South Tipperary County Chairman, unveiled a bronze plaque on the external wall of the library in Cahir’s market square by Irish sculptor Dony MacManus.

The plaque commemorates the visit to the town on that day fifty years ago by Saint Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975).

Dony MacManus , a Dublin sculptor now based in Florence, designed the plaque. Underneath the image of St Josemaría Escrivá, there are scenes of Cahir Castle and of Cahir House Hotel, where the founder of Opus Dei had a meal, as well as the following text:

Saint Josemaría Escrivá (1902-1975), founder of Opus Dei, visited Cahir on 18 August 1959 during his one and only stay in Ireland. He was canonised on 6 October 2002. This plaque was erected to commemorate that visit and as a reminder of his message that God can be found in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Mr Pat Meagher, Chairperson of the Cahir Commemorative Committee, said:

“From the very beginning this initiative has received wonderful support from all. The local councillors have given it their unanimous backing. Funding from the South Tipperary Development Company was received for the event, together with private donations. To each and everyone we wish to thank them most sincerely for their support, without which this event would not have happened.”
