The first street in Tuscany to be named after Saint Josemaría was inaugurated on 6 October. Lucca Town Council highlighted the importance of the event by selecting a street at the famous city-walls to take his name.

The “Cammino di San Josemaría Escrivá” is a street about three hundred metres long connecting the outer part of the town, where the railway station is located, to the historic town centre.

During the inauguration ceremony, Pietro Fazzi, Mayor of Lucca, explained that the Town Council chose a street that was constantly in use by townspeople and tourists because the town is highly appreciative of the content of the Saint’s message.

A commemorative stone plaque which was unveiled during the ceremony reads: “Saint Josemaría Escrivá opened up a new way of sanctification in the Catholic Church, reminding people that everyone can achieve holiness by doing their work and their daily activities in a Christian spirit. He was beatified in 1992 and canonized on 6 October 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Saint Josemaría went for a walk by these walls on 11 July 1956.”

The day before the inauguration ceremony, the Town Council made the Centro Agora available for an informative meeting about Saint Josemaría, with a number of testimonies and the screening of a video about his catechetical journeys in South America in 1974.
