Work on Church of St Josemaria forges ahead in Munyaka

In 2003, the Catholics of Munyaka obtained some land to begin building a church in honor of St Josemaria Escriva. They now have a temporary building which they use for Sunday Mass, and they are hoping that the proper church, with a presbytery, will soon be finished.

During summer 2009 the village organized a ceremony to raise funds. The Parish Priest, Fr. Ndikaru wa Teresia, celebrated Holy Mass for a large crowd of people.

After the ceremony Leah, together with her husband, told in detail the story of the cure that she obtained through St Josemaria’s intercession at the end of the 1980s. This was what led her to spread devotion to St Josemaria, founder of Opus Dei, throughout the area.

The church is situated in a majority Protestant area, and people are not well off. There is little or no public transport, and up until now Catholics had to go to Mass at Gachie, the nearest village, three kilometers away. They are delighted to be able to have Mass in their own church.

The permanent church is being built by volunteer work on the part of the faithful. When building material arrives, members of the community with the right skills do the work, and the women take charge of providing them with meals. Like that everyone is involved in the task and benefit from the intercession of their new patron saint.

Many of the young people took part in performing plays that were put on to raise money. Thanks to their help, enough money was donated to put the roof on the church.
