Our family has gone through very difficult moments
I’m a teacher, but at present I work for a big airline in Nairobi. In Kenya where even mothers with small children have to work full time to make ends meet, many families suffer very much. There is no question of staying home to look after the children. We were not spared from this social problem. For us, the solution was to hire a “house help” and work full time.
I started working in Travel Industry when I was expecting my second son. My husband and I had to plan well to look after the family. As the Founder of Opus Dei says that a day should never pass without a mortification. Our daily mortification with a lot of love was to make sure that we give our children a lot of time whenever we could.
We traveled a lot together as a family. During our most hectic days when the kids were between 4 and 8 years and had to be prepared to go to school, we were never able to say the morning prayers in the house. My husband and I could have done this by waking up earlier but we wanted the children to know the importance of prayer and that we had to make time for prayer. So our morning prayers were said in the car on our way to school and to the office. It became such an “Odero tradition” that the children were the ones to lead the prayers and to remind us to start the prayer in the car.
Over the past fifteen years, our family has gone through very difficult moments. Our youngest daughter was sick for some years and that made us move close to Our Lady help of the sick. My husband lost his job and many other problems followed. Thanks to the spirit of the Work where we learn about divine filiation. Everything is left to the Will of God. With all this the entire family manages to be calm, serene and joyful.
Without Opus Dei, I really have no clue of what kind of life I would be living now.
